Oh, so much to do, but so little time and energy. Holiday pop-ups are plentiful. The central market hosts a tamales making class. The Amor y Queso charcuterie board in Deep Ellum celebrates its first birthday this Sunday; stop and spank them. Or buy snacks. (We can’t say what they would prefer.) And Plano is hosting a Dickens Holiday Event Saturday night.
Below is a highlight reel. Now get out there and start trouble.
Feast of the abrogation of Alexander
4026 Cedar Springs Road
Friday, December 3, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
Uptown Alexandre’s bar is organizing a repeal of Prohibition Day this Friday. They’re celebrating One Nation Under Booze’s birthday by turning their bar into a sweatshop for the night. They will feature classic cocktails, 1930s music and “enough champagne to celebrate the end of a very dark period in cocktail history”. La Pompe will take the stage at 10 p.m. Yes, you should dress up. Absoutely.
AT&T Discovery District, brunch and parade
211, rue S. Akard (downtown)
Saturday December 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The problem with parades is you have to stay there forever, right? Or not. This Saturday, the Dallas Holiday Parade starts downtown at 10 a.m., but make your way to The Exchange at AT&T Discovery District and snag seats on their patio or upstairs for a great view of the parade while browning. Downstairs you can watch the parade and enjoy the brunch of Rise + Thyme. Upstairs, the The second floor will serve an all-you-can-eat brunch buffet (I haven’t seen these words for a while). Better hang tickets quickly; use the links for each restaurant above. The dining room is also open for regular business.
Return to the AT&T Discovery District on Sunday watch the movie Elf on their 104 foot media wall. Show time is 4 p.m. Bonus: they’ll have hot chocolate and well-watered apple cider.
White Rock Holiday Market
9150 Garland Road
Saturday December 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Sure, Small Business Saturday was last weekend, but our local artisans can’t get by one day a year. The White Rock Farmers’ Holiday Market is a great opportunity to pick up gifts and feast on fresh local produce. This market will take place the next three Saturdays (until December 18) from 8 a.m. to noon.
NIWA pop-up pastry market
2939 Main Street (Deep Ellum)
Saturday, December 4, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
NIWA, the Japanese barbecue of Deep Ellum, has collaborated with Oh! May goodness!, a French-inspired Japanese pastry, for a pop-up this Saturday. This “thick cream and soft sponge cake specialist” will offer limited quantities of Basque panna cotta, mousses and cheesecakes on sale from the restaurant’s window.
Lakewood Brewing Co., Bourbon Barrel Temptress 2021 release
2302 Executive Drive (Garland)
Saturday, December 4, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Saturday is a big day for Garland. Each year, Lakewood Brewing Co. employees pour their flagship Imperial Stout, Temptress, into a variety of bourbon casks for five to 10 months. The result is a spectacularly sultry dark goddess. This Saturday the 2021 BBT is being released from his watered-down wooden prison. Pick up one of the brewery’s first draws, or a few to go, this Saturday. Like we said, big day for Garland.
12 Christmas Crawl Bars at Playground Bar Uptown
2908 McKinney Avenue
Saturday December 4 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Better to have your pants starched and squeezed for this one. Playground Bar Uptown is the starting point for this Saturday pub crawl. Registration is done in person and lasts from noon to 3 p.m. At that point you will get a 16 ounce color changing Santa Claus stadium cup for all your drinks. They slap a bracelet on your arm, and you go on your way through Santa’s Wonderland to 11 other bars. Appropriate dress for the holidays is strongly suggested. There is no coverage at any of the bars and your wristband will give you promotions at each location. Some of the participating bars include Cutie Pie’s Bar, Kung Fu Saloon, and Nodding Donkey. here is a menu. Get more details about their Facebook event page.
Anniversary of the repeal of Celestial Beerworks
2530 Butler Street
Sunday, December 5, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Grill our brewers this Sunday at Celestial’s third annual repeal party. While you’re at it, celebrate with their recent Berliner Weisse, a fresh-from-the-press raspberry, blackberry and blueberry beer.
Dude Sweet Chocolate is 12
408 W. Eighth Street, # 102
Sunday, December 5, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
The Child Jesus is not the only one to celebrate his birthday in December. And you better bet that your chocolate salami Dude throws a birthday party like no other. Join them this Sunday at 5 p.m. for the party. Extract from the invitation: “You are invited to FOUR HOURS OF HAND-ARTIFIED CHOCOLATE TASTINGS IN SMALL LOTS, CHOCOLATE DRINKS AND TUNES FOR A HELLUVA TWELVE YEARS BIRTHDAY PARTY” ”
They will have tastings galore of their artisanal little chocolates and plenty of drinks, including hot chocolate buttered rum. If that last part didn’t do it for you, then forget about it.
Brunch screenings at Alamo Drafthouse
One of the things we missed a lot during the (first part of) the pandemic was the Sunday brunch screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse. Visit this brunch screenings page for specific details. The December programming includes Love, in fact this Sunday, followed by Vacations December 11 Carole December 24th. And New Years Day is The apartment. Have you ever seen this on your regular TV? Well watch it on the big screen with a bacon taco in your hand, then drain your pasta with a tennis racket for the rest of your life.
Show love at Thunderbird Station
3400, rue du Commerce
Scroll down until you find the safety video on Thunderbird Station Facebook Page and watch a Subaru slam in their patio this week. Then spend that weekend showing some love, buy a few drinks and some food, to help them out with what is probably a costly little incident. And take your foot off the gas on those curves, kids.
