New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced that the $ 145,000 expansion project to 272 East Ferry Street has been completed.
BUFFALO, NY – A recent expansion of the Mandela Market on Buffalo’s east side will help provide fresh fruits and vegetables to those living in a federally recognized food desert.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday announced the $ 145,000 expansion project to 272 East Ferry Street has been completed. The expansion was supported by funding from New York State’s East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund and the Buffalo Billion II initiative.
According to the governor’s office, Mandela Market is open 24 hours a day and is accessible by bus lines, providing fresh food to an area partially covered by a second USDA designated standard food desert.
âAccess to fresh, quality food is essential to the health and prosperity of all communities during these difficult times,â Governor Cuomo said. âNew York State is proud to support projects such as the expansion of the Mandela Market and the continued revitalization of the East Side of Buffalo. I congratulate Ahmed Saleh, who works hard every day to provide food for the neighborhood he lives in and loves.
Saleh established Mandela Marked in 2007 and opened a second location on Broadway Street in 2018.
The governor’s office said Saleh has undertaken this expansion to provide its customers with healthier food options as well as prepared foods. The recent expansion of the East Ferry Street site involved the construction of an additional 1,500 square feet of space, as well as the purchase of new equipment.
âWe are delighted that our market expansion on East Ferry Street is complete and ready to be enjoyed by residents of the East Side of Buffalo,â said Saleh. “I thank New York State for supporting this opportunity to bring fresh produce, new food options and additional jobs to a neighborhood in need of convenient, affordable and nutritious dining options.”
âThe lack of access to fresh food is an injustice,â said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. âWe are proud to support the expansion of the Mandela Market, which will put healthy foods on the tables of families on the East Side of Buffalo. Thanks to Mandela Market founder Ahmed Saleh who helps lead the way in making our community even stronger. ”
Governor Cuomo announced the $ 50 million East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund in March 2019. The initiative was created to revitalize the East Side of Buffalo through “investments in the four major North Trade Corridors. South “. This includes Michigan, Jefferson, Fillmore and Bailey avenues.
